REVIEW: ACID by Emma Pass

June 30, 2013

2113. In Jenna Strong’s world, ACID – the most brutal, controlling police force in history – rule supreme. No throwaway comment or muttered dissent goes unnoticed – or unpunished. And it was ACID agents who locked Jenna away for life, for a bloody crime she struggles to remember. The only female inmate in a violent high-security prison, Jenna has learned to survive by any means necessary. And when a mysterious rebel group breaks her out, she must use her strength, speed and skill to stay one step ahead of ACID – and to uncover the truth about what really happened on that dark night two years ago.
*Thanks Random House for my copy in return for a honest review, this did not affect my review whatsoever*
How to put "ACID" into words... I truley don't know how. Perhaps one of my favorite Dystopians ever. This book has mind blowing plot twists, kick-ass characters, action and I loved every bit of it. Kept me up to all hours, ACID is a book I would recommend to anyone and everyone.

I went into ACID without any expectations or knowledge of what it was about. I saw it on The Random House Website and thought why not request it, it's a young adult dystopian. Little did I know that I would be pleasantly surprised, this book had everything I wanted and more. In a very advanced dystopian London, the town is being run by a terrifying police group called ACID (Agency for Crime Investigation and Defence). This story is about Jenna who was blamed for the death of her parents which she can only remember as a accident. Leaving her life of riches behind she is the only female in a prison of males and is trying to make sense of why she has just been broken out and by whom. Jenna soon discovers that not everything is as it seems.

I think all of us can admit that a well written strong heroine is one we love to read about and Jenna Strong (although she goes through many name changes throughout the book) was. From the first page I loved her bullsh** (excuse my french) intolerant attitude and she goes through so much but never could I call her weak. Her strength all though appearing to be cold to the outside world, was admirable and we did see moments of emotion which I loved. She was kickass addition to the female characters of YA today and I definitely preferred her to Tris any day (Sorry Divergent fans). In the story there was also a character called Max who I loved. He strong, but had a vulnerability and sweetness about him.

From the very beginning there was so much I wanted to know about the ACID government. The author managed to draw us in but still leave us wondering. It has great pacing and a lot happened in just the one novel, but it worked out really well. I wanted to see how it would conclude but I didn't want it to end because I so hooked in that world. Through out the story there were various articles from ACID which really gave us a insight on what was happening and how ACID has built the world to be in fear of Jenna, who was blamed for everything. I mean as I said before ACID and General Harvey basically ruined her life but she remained brave.

The plot twists were amazing and unexpected and the action was a refreshing change. In particular scenes I had a voice in my head saying "That seems too easy, hmm" and then BOOM, a page-turning plot twist would occur and shake everything up. Emma Pass is a extremely talented author who should be truly proud of this fabulous debut which I hope gets the attention it deserves. And I can point out how awesome the cover is, it sets up the story so well! ACID is a book I can see so many people loving, I know I loved it!

PS. I'm a bit behind on reviews but in July you can expect two raving reviews on Friday Brown by Vikki Wakefield and The Iron King by Julie Kagawa. GFC Following is sadly shutting down tomorrow and I can not say I'm thrilled, please follow me on BlogLovin, I appreciate it!

  5. Glad to hear that you love this book! I first thought that this book would be just another dystopian book with a chaotic world and all that. And when I saw that ACID title plus the raining cover? I actually thought that this is about a world ruined by an acidic rain. Ahaha, Now that I think about it, I'm just so...euh.
And I've ust now that ACID is actually a police group. That sounds really interesting :)
Oh, and Jenna sounds pretty badass too. Love it when my main character had a backbone, not just scream and be afraid kind of girl.

Anyway, thanks for sharing. Great review! I'm gonna add this to my TBR right now :)
