What's Up Buttercup?! (2)

January 21, 2014

I was really glad with all of the positive feedback my first "What's up Buttercup?!' post got and since so much has happened… I've decided it's time for another one. For those who don't know what this features all about, it's what I've been calling a what's been happening of late sorta post. It's basically a recap/update post that can be posted during anytime I feel like. It's just an idea that i've come up with and decided to post on my blog. Enjoy!
Recently thanks to Francoise's recommendation I've been obsessing over the Hush Hush series by Becca Fitzpatrick. I've just finished the conclusion, Finale and I'm so glad she got me into these books. The series (particularly book one) has so many things I'd usually dislike but somehow I adored this series and these certain issues didn't bother me at all. It just seemed to work and I've definitely got to give Becca Fitzpatrick credit for that. Despite our protagonist Nora, frustrating me on many occasions, Hush Hush has become one of my favourite series. The story lines are so cleverly crafted and the story is fast paced and almost impossible to put down. Plus there is Patch and omg I love him so much, he has easily climbed to the highs of my book boyfriend list.

Recently I read Harry Potter and The Philosopher's Stone for the first time which felt like a massive achievement. Harry Potter has such a big fandom and I definitely felt out of place not being in it. It was one of my New Year's resolutions and I was so glad to have achieved it so early on in the year. Despite having seen most of the movies, I loved it and thought it was a lot of fun. It is such a creative idea and I was easily transported into the world of magic JK Rowling so vividly wrote. It was a fun read and I'll definitely be continuing with the series at a later date. I rated it 4 stars. Why not 5? I think it came down to already knowing the storyline and me being older than the targeted audience.

Currently I'm on my second last week of a 6 week school holiday and I've been trying to make the most of this time by reading and writing posts  as much as I can. I've already read 11 books which I feel is a really good start for my goal of 100 books read in 2014. I'm trying to read a combination of both review and non review books because I'm determined to get these reviews going but still read what I want. Once school starts again things will get pretty busy again and especially now that I don't have a computer, I'm trying to schedule as many posts as I can so my blog doesn't suffer because of this.

So far these holidays I've been on a coastal holiday and attended apple camp. A program run by Apple (yes as in the one who makes IPhones) where you make videos. In other news, I GOT A TURTLE! Next I'm planning on reading You Don't Know About Me by Sophia Bennett. What are you reading at the moment?

  1. I have been meaning to check out the Hush Hush series...but I always end up forgetting about it and reading other things instead...
Same goes for the Harry Potter series...yes I feel like such an outsider not being part of that fandom...

    1. Hi Desnica! I totally get being nervous to read Harry Potter but it's definitely worth it if you get around to it. Hush Hush is so good and I strongly reccomend it. I named my turtle Douglas (dougie) only to find out it was a girl, lol! Thanks for commenting.

    1. Hi Amy-Anne :) Well I get 6 weeks because this is my long holiday. Usually inbetween terms I'd get a two week break. A lot of you have been requesting Dougie photos so you can expect some soon. I know, such an interesting name for a girl. Thanks for commenting.

  3. I have a turtle! Well, a tortoise. I don't know if we mean the same thing (cultural differences!) but in Britain tortoises are the ones that live on land and turtles are the ones that live in water. (Although neither live in Britain naturally!) Anyway, our tortoise is called Edith ;)

Glad you enjoyed Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone! It's not my favourite book in the series - definitely more of a younger children's novel than the rest of them. They kind of become more YA-like as you get further into the series, if you know what I mean? Hope you enjoy the rest of them!

    1. Oh awesome! Edith is such a cute name. That's also how it is in Australia. I get what you mean about them getting more YA and that makes me so excited to read the last few books especially because those are the movies I haven't seen so it will be an extra fun read. Thanks for commenting Maya :)

  4. Ooh what a great feature! I think I missed your first post so I'll have to go and look for it. Love it when blogger's write a personal post every now and again :)

SO glad you enjoyed Harry Potter and the Philospher's Stone! Even though I'm a hardcore Potterhead, I can understand why you'd rate it 4 stars instead of 5. I read the book when I was about 6 or 7 and since I've re-read it so many times it has become a part of me. Like re-living my childhood :) Maybe once you read the whole series you'll return to the book and love it even more :D And ooh I love Hush, Hush! Patch <3 I haven't continued on with the series but hopefully I'll get my hands on the sequel soon.

TURTLES! Lucky xD I request a photo, hehe.

    1. Yay it makes me so glad to know you enjoyed this feature. I was nervous it would come across to boring or unbookish but it's a nice change to write every now and then. I think that's lovely that Harry Potter is such a big part of your childhood, I wish I'd read them when I was a kid. You NEED to continue with Hush Hush, Patch just gets even better. I'll post a photo of Dougie on my next 'What's Up Buttercup?!' post because she's so cute! Thanks Zoe :D

  5. These posts are such a good idea, I love the little series you've started! I haven't read any of the Harry Potter books before, I love the films but never really had any interest in the books, I may start them soon though!

  6. I'm so glad you liked Hush Hush!!! I was so nervous you wouldn't like it because many people didn't and like you there were a lot of issues but I still fell in love with it some how. Harry Potter just gets better and better and you MUST continue!!! I'm so depressed because we barely have any holidays yet!!! But it seems we got better than some.

    1. IKR it's so hard to explain how good it is because there are so many things wrong with that but it doesn't even matter. So glad you got me into them. I can't believe we have only just over a week of holidays yet I feel like it hasn't even happened. But we need to catch up sometime before school, definitely need to. But I'm loving the fangirling phone calls :)

  7. Omg Hush Hush was soo frustrating, Nora was just like Bella and Patch wanted to kill her! Glad you ended up enjoying it though. I am SO glad you finally joined the Harry Potter fandom, I LOVE it so much. I hope you continue with the rest of the series!

  8. Check you finding a new favourite series! It's quite funny how different books might use the same tropes we don't normally like but we love them anyway :D Yaaaay for HP! I haven't read the series either but recently marathoned all of the films and regret leaving it so long :(
Sounds like you've had a brilliant holiday!
