REVIEW: Of Poseidon by Anna Banks

May 13, 2013

Galen is the prince of the Syrena, sent to land to find a girl he's heard can communicate with fish.

Emma is on vacation at the beach. When she runs into Galen — literally, ouch! — both teens sense a connection. But it will take several encounters, including a deadly one with a shark, for Galen to be convinced of Emma's gifts. Now, if he can only convince Emma that she holds the key to his kingdom . . . Told from both Emma and Galen's points of view, here is a fish-out-of-water story that sparkles with intrigue, humour, and waves of romance.

*Thanks Hardie Grant Egmont for my copy in return for a honest review, this did not affect my review whatsoever*

Of Poseidon was a light and funny read. Before I dug into my huge list of review books I couldn't help but read Of Poseidon, which I managed to do in a day. I love mermaid stories and that sorta thing and it was definitely one of the very well done ones. And it wasn't till I started it that I realised how much I missed a good mermaid story.

I liked that we got alternating chapters between Galen and Emma. Because it was nice to get a deeper sense of both characters and their emotions. I was discussing with my friend the other day about how appealing a book is that has a interesting first chapter and how off putting a slow beginning can be. Of Poseidon started off with humorous narration as Galen and Emma quite literally bumped into eachother. It got right into things without rushing the story line which did score a star

There were some minor issues in this book. At the beginning it felt as though Galen was kinda insta-lovey for Emma where for Emma it was a attraction. Though this died down within the first few chapters and wasn't a issue. I certainly would not call it a Insta-Love relationship. Sometimes Emma could be a bit frustrating because she would get annoyed a lot and I wanted her to open her eyes and see that Galen actually liked her. But I guess I can't blame her because, without spoiling anything I guess you could say it was a instinctive trait. Though these were minor problems and didn't stop me from enjoying myself.

A lot of people found this book predictable and while I had my strong suspicions about Emma, there was a twist at the end which I was not expecting. I'd rate Of Poseidon 4.5 because it was one of those light and entertaining reads that was good enough for me to be really wanting a copy of the sequel. It also had me laughing quite a bit.

4.5 Stars

  7. I really want to read this! Mermaid stories sound exactly like my thing but I've yet to read one! :O I like it if an author manages to pull of two POVs so I'm really intrigued! I'm also glad it wasn't exactly an insta love relationship.

    Great review! :D

  10. I'm so glad that you ended up enjoying this one! I'm with you in loving mermaid stories and this one is so much fun - and you're right, funny! I hope you like Of Triton just as much. There isn't the mystery but I enjoyed being back in Emma and Galen's heads. They are such a fantastic pair.

  13. Before I was in the blogging world, I received an ARC of this in a giveaway...and then gave it away myself before I even read it. Which is really stupid since I've now heard such great things about it! I'm intrigued about the twist and I'm happy that their relationship really isn't insta-love. Great review! :)
