BLOG TOUR: Faking It By Numbers

December 18, 2014

Things are looking up for Josie Browning. Her boyfriend, James, is crazy about her, and she's scored a writing job at indi. Now the pressure is on for Josie to prove she's got what it takes to help plan indi's launch. Plus, she's battling with flatmates, frenemies and confusing feelings for travel writer Alex.

High on the perks at indi, Josie's doing a pretty good job of faking her way in the industry - even though she still hasn't mastered her hair straightener. But when Josie is invited to a media junket, she accidentally sets off a string of lies that threaten to ruin her reputation, love life and career forever.

I really enjoyed The Intern and it's sequel, Faking It, so i'm really happy to be hosting a day on the Faking It Blog Tour. Here's a fab guest post by the lovely lady herself, Gabrielle Tozer.

Maths was far from my strongest subject at high school, but I do love sharing a cheeky statistic (or 12!). Check these digits out...

22.2k+ The number of times I’ve tweeted since 2009 when I should have been writing THE INTERN, FAKING IT, book three, blog posts, articles, you name it… something other than tweets!

312* The number of times I saved the FAKING IT manuscript word document per minute to avoid losing anything. This number has increased since writing THE INTERN, as I have experienced the sheer terror of losing edits on a scene. It’s not, pretty, kids. I may have morphed into a teary-tantrum-throwing tornado. Like I said, not pretty at all.

0 The number of vegetarian pizzas I ate while writing FAKING IT. Are you crazy? Hawaiian’s where the party’s at! (And I ate about a million of those – yep, I love me some H&P, just like my books’ unlikely hero, Josie Browning.)

4 The number of times I came up with a new schedule to try to fit writing FAKING IT around a fulltime job. I tried colour-coded spreadsheets, lists (involving wake-up and leave-the-house times, so I didn’t get TOO into it and forget to go into the office!), post-its, phone alarms, epic diarising… Which brings me to:

0 The number of schedules I perfected while trying to fit writing FAKING IT around a fulltime job. Turns out, it doesn’t matter how much you plan, penning 80,000-90,000 words around an 8-6 job is damn hard. A routine helps, but flexibility is often just as important.

9 The number of times I gave myself butterflies writing certain scenes between certain characters in a certain new book… (Hello, Josie, James and Alex!).

40 The number of pages I axed in one of the later, close-to-deadline edits of FAKING IT. It definitely makes for a pacier, tighter, punchier read, but I can still hear those unused words, sentences and paragraphs screaming my name in the middle of the night.

5** The number of Ferrero Rafaellos I want to eat right now. OK, OK… the number of Ferrero Rafaellos I have eaten right now.

4 The number of people I definitely know will read FAKING IT (Hi JT, Mum, Dad and Jacqui!). Everyone else… do you accept bribes?

Millions The number of people I hope will read FAKING IT and THE INTERN. Can someone get Oprah, Ellen and Jimmy Fallon on the phone already?

3 The number of times I’ve frocked up all nice and fancy while writing from home. Every other time? Bra off, trackies on! Other go-to writing attire includes: JT’s-tee-and-undie combination, singlets-and-undies combination, singlet-and-loose skirt combination. Comfort is key!

Countless The number of emails, calls, tweets, messages and comments from readers that have put a smile on my dial throughout this process. Honestly, the support, excitement and positivity from you all reminds me why I do what I do! Keep it coming – I love writing books for you guys. Actually, on that note, I better bust out a fresh box of Ferrero Rafaellos… I have a new book to work on!***

*As always, all statistics are estimations from the very scientific Gabrielle Tozer School of Made-up Stuff and Other Awesomesauceness.

**Kidding. Maybe we should double that number. Or triple it. You know, just to be safe. And really, really scientific.

***Just need to eat my body weight in Mum’s Christmas cooking first!
