2 Diva's Bookish Discussions - I don't like Sci-Fi

April 6, 2014

Ok.. confession time, I don't like Sci-Fi. Science fiction and me.. we just don't mesh well together (to say it as Cher from Clueless would). I don't know why but it's as if we made a silent agreement that we simply aren't meant to be. I've never watched more than 10 minutes of Doctor Who and I've probably only read one Sci-Fi book.

Why? I don't know. But it's like my subconscious sends my brain a red light when attempting anything Sci-Fi. Though I must say before continuing that the only exception to this was These Broken Stars by Amie Kaufman and Megan Spooner, which I loved. For me Sci-Fi is like a whole different language, one that I am not fluent in. I don't know all the fancy terms and while I've watched ET, I'm not that big on Aliens.

I'm more of a contemporary, romance, type of girl and for me Sci-Fi is a big step outside of the comfort zone. I need to be able to fully emerse myself in the plot and characters whilst actually having a clue on what the hecks happening. Being someone with a vivid imagination, I'd hate to not be able to imagine things when I'm reading. I feel like that would happen seeing as it all comes across as jiberish to me. Someone needs to buy me a Sci-Fi dictionary/guide for beginners but to be honest, I probably wouldn't read it. I'm not trying to slam Sci-Fi, I'm just saying it's not my cup of tea.

If a book is really hyped about and happens to be science fiction, I may check it out. But never do I look at the Sci-Fi section in the book store. Maybe it's not fair for me to make these judgements when I haven't given it's real go but do I need to? I've come to the conclusion that for now, I'n ok not being best buds with Sci-fi. I'm just not into that sort of stuff and I'm fine with that. I totally have respect for those who love it, that's awesome. Do you have a genre you don't like that others love? If you think I'm crazy check out Francoise's post on why she loves Science Fiction.

PS. Sorry this post was so short! But there isn't really much I can say other than this, also I've been having technical difficulties and have crafted this post all on IPhone. Tuesday I'll be posting a Divergent review as I'm seeing the film tomorrow and I can't wait to share my thoughts with you. Hopefully next 2DBD we may possibly post a vlog :)

  1. If we all enjoyed the same books, how boring would we all be?
Depends what we mean by sci fi, technically I'm not a big fan of aliens either unless they've come to end the world, apocalyptic style. I love dystopian, and that's under the banner of sci fi. I can understand why you'd try to steer clear, it seems so popular at the moment that there's too much sci fi crap being churned out.

    Awesome article Sunny :)

  2. Hey Sunny! I'm not a big fan of Sci-Fi, either, though like you I loved These Broken Stars! I will read some sci-fi but I'm not really keen on it, and it depends on where it is set, also.

    Awesome post! <3

  3. I'm not big on sci-fi either (although I DO love Doctor Who.) It's the same with crime fiction - they're just not my cup of tea, although of course there are exceptions. Great post :)

  4. Can't wait to see your Divergent review! I think I know what you mean about sci-fi, some of that stuff is HARDCORE. I can't say I'm the same though, big Star Wars fan here :D

  5. Sci-fi is not my favourite genre, either! I've never, just like you, been able to watch Doctor Who(but that may be because I'm surrounded with talk about it all day at school), or have understood the different language that seems to come with it.
I would love to try and read more of that genre though, as I've hardly read it, although, I need a good connection with the character to like a story; and I feel sci-fi is more about the world itself.

By the way, I adore the mention of ET in there. That made me smile!

  6. I'm not a huge sci-fi fan, I know it feels like everyone seems to love Dr Who, but it's always seemed really cheesy and silly to me (though I recall watcing some of the very old series on the ABC when I was a child). I am enjoying YA set in space and some sci-fi, too! I think you have to find the ones that suit you :)
