REVIEW: What's Left of Me by Kat Zhang

April 9, 2013

I should not exist. But I do.

Eva and Addie started out the same way as everyone else—two souls woven together in one body, taking turns controlling their movements as they learned how to walk, how to sing, how to dance. But as they grew, so did the worried whispers. Why aren’t they settling? Why isn’t one of them fading? The doctors ran tests, the neighbors shied away, and their parents begged for more time. Finally Addie was pronounced healthy and Eva was declared gone. Except, she wasn’t . . .

For the past three years, Eva has clung to the remnants of her life. Only Addie knows she’s still there, trapped inside their body. Then one day, they discover there may be a way for Eva to move again. The risks are unimaginable-hybrids are considered a threat to society, so if they are caught, Addie and Eva will be locked away with the others. And yet . . . for a chance to smile, to twirl, to speak, Eva will do anything.

What's Left of Me was a mostly well-paced book with an original and thought-provoking storyline of 2 sisters woven in the same body. I really felt for Eva, how hard would it be living when nobody knows you exist? Addie was a likeable but it annoyed me a lot when she acted like she was the one suffering terribly and some of her actions were selfish. But still you could tell the two sisters were closer then ever.

It was sometimes confusing knowing which twin was speaking, especially when both twins where having a conversation with each other. I am a massive Vampire Diaries fan so whenever I heard the word "Hybrids" I thought of the half vampire half wolf species Klaus created. Haha.

This was a book that flowed nicely, the characters were likeable and the storyline wasn't overwhelming but was enough to keep us reading with smiles on our faces. There was also a romance that gave the story an extra sparkle but certainly didn't override the situation. It ended well and I am anxious to see what turns Zhang will make in book two. And don't you just love the cover and how it reals you in.

I would recommend this book and I enjoyed it, it was different and easy to read. Kat Zhang's debut novel was awesome and I am really interested to read the currently untitled book 2 in the Hybrid chronicles.

  1. I liked the characters too, but agree with you about knowing which twin was speaking.

  2. Brilliant review! :) I loved this book too, it was so original and well written. I liked how we saw the story from Eva's point of view rather than Addie's. I can't wait for book 2 in the series. Thanks for posting :)
