The Gallagher Girls (Book # 1) by Ally Carter Review

January 7, 2013

I'd Tell You I Love You, But Then I'd Have to Kill You

Cammie may be an elite spy in training, but in her sophomore year, she is beginning her most dangerous mission -- she's falling in love.
The Gallagher Academy for Exceptional Young Women is a fairly typical all-girls school -- that is, if every school taught advanced martial arts in PE, the latest in chemical warfare in science; and students received extra credit for breaking CIA codes in computer class. In truth, Gallagher Academy might claim to be a school for geniuses -- but it s really a school for spies.
Cammie Morgan is a second-generation Gallagher Girl, and by her sophomore year she s already fluent in fourteen languages and capable of killing a man in seven different ways (three of which involve a piece of uncooked spaghetti). But the one thing the Gallagher Academy hasn't prepared her for is what to do when she falls for an ordinary boy who thinks she s an ordinary girl.
Sure, she can tap his phone, hack into his computer, and track him through a mall without his ever being the wiser, but can she have a regular relationship with a boy who can never know the truth about her?

"HONOUR HER SWORD, KEEP HER SECRETS, LEARN HER SKILLS"
I really enjoyed I'd Tell You I Love You, But Then I'd Have to Kill You by Ally Carter. The Gallagher Academy for girls was filled with a bunch of intelligent and interesting characters. Cammie has never lived a normal life and that's just the way she wanted it. That is until she realises the sacrifices one must make when living a secret life, especially when falling for a normal boy.
I liked the plot because although there are many books that cover the topic of spies and this plot may have been used before, it was told in a way that was interesting and different. It left me longing for an application form into Gallagher yet at the same time I felt for Cammie who had to choose essentially between love or her spy life.
Cammie and her spy friends made Gallagher seem so realistic and exciting that it didn't just feel like another spy novel. Which if you gonna cover a genre like that I think it needs to be different then the others. Which it did, it introduced me to a whole different world of spy-life. It kinda improved the stereo-type vision of a spy book. It wasn't James Bond and it wasn't EJ12, it was The Gallagher Girls.
I liked Josh and the cute relationship the 2 shared. And every time Cammie had to leave her few minutes of normalcy with josh to return to another life, I melted inside. The characters were well written and had interesting personalities, teachers included!
Now looking back on the book it feels strange that even when buying this book it took a couple of months to get past the first few chapters. It didn't exactly start slow or anything, I guess I just got that far and then got distracted with other books. But this year I was determined to add it to my Summer Reads, especially with all the hype and everything and being so far behind in the series of 5. So I was glad that when finishing it yesterday I quite enjoyed it and I am looking forward to reading book 2, Cross My Heart and Hope to Spy.
