The Fault in Our Stars by John Green Review

January 4, 2013

After hearing incredible reviews from everyone and loving what I heard, I was so excited to read The Fault in Our Stars by John Green. It is one of those books that when you see the cover, name, plot and reviews you'll do almost anything to get your hands on a copy. Which in my case ended up with me hammering my parents 24/7 "Can we go to the bookstore now", and then "OK, what about now". Resulting in a not so happy Dad but a very happy costumer who was thrilled to walk away, book in hand.

Diagnosed with Stage IV thyroid cancer at 13, Hazel was prepared to die until, at 14, a medical miracle shrunk the tumours in her lungs... for now.

Two years post-miracle, sixteen-year-old Hazel is post-everything else, too; post-high school, post-friends and post-normalcy. And even though she could live for a long time (whatever that means), Hazel lives tethered to an oxygen tank, the tumours tenuously kept at bay with a constant chemical assault.

Enter Augustus Waters. A match made at cancer kid support group, Augustus is gorgeous, in remission, and shockingly to her, interested in Hazel. Being with Augustus is both an unexpected destination and a long-needed journey, pushing Hazel to re-examine how sickness and health, life and death, will define her and the legacy that everyone leaves behind.

My Review
OMG Words cannot express the utter love I feel for this book that changed my life. I still have tears in my eyes even though I finished this book half an hour ago. I knew I would love The Fault in Our Stars, I just had that gut feeling. Though I didn't know that it would be my favourite book in the whole entire world and for a massive Twilight and Hunger Games fanatic like me that is a big statement.

The Fault In Our Stars was a book that swept me off my feet and stayed with me way after the final page. Hazel and Augustus had a relationship that was straight-forward and cringe-worthy in a good way. Augustus and Hazel were a match made in heaven.

From the moment I read page one I was under John Green's spell and as said on the blurb "A gorgeous plot named Augustus Waters". Who was let me tell you one of the most sweet and down-right perfect male leads. I was only expecting to read a couple of pages before the night ends as I was quite tired. But as you can probably guess, I ended up reading half of the book and when forced to turn the light out it was all I could think about. Resulting in me waking up early to continue on.

I felt emotion with all the characters, who were all interesting. Hazel, even though dealing with a lot, was a strong female lead. I really like all the wonderful quotes in this book. John's writing was smart, humorous, witty and thought provoking. Although this book is called The Fault in Our Stars, I have nothing to fault except for the sadness that the end brought me, I cried twice

As Gus says, "I decided a while ago not to deny myself the simpler pleasures of existence". Though in this case I'd say the pleasure of reading such an emotional, thought provoking and heart wrenching novel. This was my first John Green book and I am extremely impressed and in love with his writing style. It is my all time favourite book and I will definitely be looking out for more John Green books.

“Sometimes, you read a book and it fills you with this weird evangelical zeal, and you become convinced that the shattered world will never be put back together unless and until all living humans read the book.”

  4. Yeah! Strong female characters for the win! I loved the sound of well developed characters and, just, yeah. This sounds just what anything a book nerd could ask for. Except I really don't want to get emotional so I've been putting it off. DX Poor excuse, but yes.

I love the pictures you put in your review, if you took them yourselves, that's awesome. You don't need me to say that to you do I. ;D

Thank you for not SPOILING anything. It is so hard to read a review for something that has spoilers.
