Valentine's Day Celebrations - REVIEW: Delirium by Lauren Oliver

February 15, 2013

Hey, ♡♡♡♡
Valentine's Day is quickly approaching and love may or may not be in the air. But there is one thing that I think all fellow book bloggers can agree on: Perfect boys only exist in books. With the exception of Harry Styles that is. Lol. So I thought I'd take this candy-filled opportunity to gush over the best book boyfriends and great reads for Valentine's Day. To kick off the Valentine Celebrations I wanted to review a book that I really enjoyed that is really thought-provoking when it comes to love. It is the one and only Delirium by Lauren Oliver, ring a bell. In the next few days you can stay tuned for posts on my book romance pet peeves, best relationships and more. Enjoy x

Before scientists found the cure, people thought love was a good thing.

They didn’t understand that once love -- the deliria -- blooms in your blood, there is no escaping its hold. Things are different now. Scientists are able to eradicate love, and the government demands that all citizens receive the cure upon turning eighteen. Lena Holoway has always looked forward to the day when she’ll be cured. A life without love is a life without pain: safe, measured, predictable, and happy.

But with ninety-five days left until her treatment, Lena does the unthinkable: She falls in love.

Delirium was a thought-provoking book as it looked at love from different perspective which created an intriguing and original dystopian love story.

Since finishing it earlier last week I have been fighting the urge to give you a review as soon as I read it. But because I personally thought that it was a good book to feature in my Valentine's posts, I have redeemed myself.

I had heard of this book but surprisingly never read a review and or summary of this book and finally after curiosity hit me, I was compelled to search for more information on Delirium. After reading the blurb and dying to get my hands on what sounded like a unique love story with a twist, I went out and bought it.

When beginning Delirium I was a tad disappointed because I had high expectations and was expecting to be hooked from the start. And I didn't want to be the odd one out who disliked Delirium. Instead I read other books until I thought it was time to jump back on the wagon again. After a few chapters with what seemed like an introduction to Lena's life, Oliver's writing style began to give me the power to carry on and finally get to the good bits.

By that time we where introduced to a stronger and more confident Lena. As she discovered the truth behind her society and the feeling of true love she became her polar opposite. She went from someone afraid to break the rules to someone who with Alex was an intriguing and empowered character.

Delirium focuses on a world where love is forbidden and looked upon as a decease. Not only like other books do you get paired with someone else, but the emotion and capability of loving is rid from you at the age of 18. Which was a concept I had never seen or thought of in a book.

Alex was a loveable character who was sweet and as we got to know him, we found out that he wasn't just a cocky character. He was willing to take risks for Lena and did really love her and their relationship was so sweet. Though I am  disappointed because I have heard that book 2 is just setting up for a love-triangle. Although Love-Triangles can sometimes be interesting or predictable, they are starting to annoy me a lot. Which is why it is so refreshing to read a love that was pure and not spent thinking about someone else. Which was what I thought was happening in Delirium until I saw team Julian banners on other blogs. Even though I am yet to meet Julian, I can't imagine not being Team Alex.

All in all this was the book that once gained pace caught my attention and had my hands quickly turning the pages. There were strong and well-written characters, main and supporting such as Hana and Grace. I'd recommend this book because I did really enjoy it.

My Delirium Rating: 5/5
